MBEP Announces Agenda and Speakers for 5th Annual State of the Region

Monterey Bay Economic Partnership (MBEP) is hosting its 5th Annual State of the Region conference on October 25th at the Hyatt Regency, Monterey. This year’s event will be another compelling gathering of over 400 leaders from across the region and the state with topics to inspire collaboration and action in important areas such as housing, healthcare, workforce, and transportation, and exciting new technologies, tools, and models that are coming to the Monterey Bay region.

Morning Keynote:  Our morning keynote speaker, State Controller Betty T. Yee will share the latest from Sacramento, focusing on the California state budget and its implications for our region.

Panel Discussion: Matt Huerta, housing program manager for MBEP, will facilitate a panel discussion on removing barriers to workforce housing development. He will be joined by three professionals engaged in this work in our region.

Morning “Lightning Rounds”:  Short inspiring talks that will address an issue pertinent to our region, propose a solution, and offer ways for attendees to get involved. Topics include transportation, regional prosperity and equity, education, and workforce.

Community Impact Award: Stephen Blum of Tellus Venture Associates will receive MBEP’s annual Community Impact Award. Mr. Blum has been instrumental in bringing high-speed broadband to the region, including assistance with the Sunesys fiber backbone from Salinas to UC Santa Cruz. As a key member of the Central Coast Broadband Consortium, he has led and advocated for many projects for underserved communities.

Afternoon Keynote:  Following lunch, the afternoon keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Victoria Sweet, Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine, UC San Francisco. Dr. Sweet practiced medicine for over twenty years at Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco. In her book “God’s Hotel: A Doctor, a Hospital, and a Pilgrimage to the Heart of Medicine” she lays out her evidence—in stories of her patients and her hospital—for some new ideas about medicine and healthcare in this country.

Afternoon Lightning Rounds: Short inspiring talks that will address an issue pertinent to our region, propose a solution, and offer ways for attendees to get involved. Topics include workforce development, childcare, forest resiliency and climate action planning.

Fireside Chat with Admiral Ann Rondeau, President, Naval Postgraduate School (NPS): President Rondeau is a retired United States Navy Vice Admiral who this year was chosen to lead NPS. Admiral Rondeau will share her thoughts on the many ways that the military and defense sector are major economic drivers for our region.

Closing Thoughts: Bay of Life – Monterey Bay as Wellspring of Well-Being, introduced by John Laird, Former CA State Natural Resources Secretary. Long-time contributors to National Geographic, Frans Lanting and Chris Eckstrom, have received numerous honors for their publications. Frans and Chris will share images and insights about the unique nature of the Monterey Bay as an ecosystem and as a place to live.

Tickets and Sponsors:  Due to limited seating, this event will sell out in advance.  MBEP would like to thank our sponsors: Ow Family Properties, South Swell Ventures, San Benito Health Foundation, CSUMB,  Kaiser Permanente, Dominican Hospital, City of Gonzales, UCSC, Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Driscoll’s, Santa Cruz County Bank, Monterey Bay Community Power, Montage Health, Stanford Children’s Hospital, Bay Federal Credit Union, Poly, Goodwill Central Coast, Voler Strategic Advisors, City of Salinas, the North America Carpenters’ Regional Council, and the Central Coast Marketing Team.
