Light & Motion launches crowdfunding effort

By Phillip Molnar

“Sidekick is the perfect companion light for GoPro cameras. It is the smallest, lightest and most powerful light to mount with a GoPro”

[SCTB Editor’s note: As of press time on January 16, the Kickstarter campaign has almost reached $39K, with a goal of $50K and 28 days to go.]

A seemingly successful Marina-based company is crowdfunding its latest project on the Kickstarter website.

Light & Motion, a bicycle and dive light manufacturer, is considered a major player in the industry and moved last year to a facility in Marina as it outgrew its spot on Cannery Row.

The company is seeking $50,000 for a device called the Sidekick, a light that attachs to the GoPro Hero, a waterproof camera that can tolerate dirt, sand and other rugged conditions. It hopes to have the project online this week.

“Our customers value our products and we are confident that we can grow a customer base that appreciates elegantly designed and high-performing lights, but honestly, it has been a tough year with the pressure from the cheaper imports,” spokeswoman Heidi Hall said of the decision to seek crowdfunding.

Light & Motion is the only major bike light manufacturer in the United States, pitting it against Asian competitors and American companies that outsource there.
