The Transforming STEM Teaching Faculty Learning Program supports higher education instructors in adopting STEM active learning techniques.

A cross-institutional cohort of UC Santa Cruz and community college STEM faculty will participate in the Transforming STEM Teaching Faculty Learning Program, a statewide program initiated by UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science and Center for Teaching and Learning and funded by a major National Science Foundation grant for Improving Undergraduate STEM Education.

The ten-month program kicked off with a two-day, in-person workshop on January 27 and 28, 2018 at UCSC.

The 2018 cohort includes:

  • Nandini Bhattacharya, Mathematics, UC Santa Cruz (Facilitator)
  • Katie Monsen, Environmental Studies, US Santa Cruz (Facilitator)
  • Madeline Adamczeski, Chemistry and Oceanography, San Jose City College
  • Stephanie Bailey, Physics, UC Santa Cruz
  • Rebecca Braslau, Chemistry, UC Santa Cruz
  • Gage Dayton, Natural Reserves & Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, UC Santa Cruz
  • Farid Dowla, Electrical Engineering, UC Santa Cruz
  • Laura Fatuzzo, Physics, Hartnell College
  • Sarah Gerhardt, Chemistry, Cabrillo College
  • Giulia Gurun, Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology, UC Santa Cruz
  • Leila Jewell, Physics, Monterey Peninsula College
  •
Tracy Larrabee, Computer Engineering, UC Santa Cruz

About the Program

The Transforming STEM Teaching Faculty Learning Program supports higher education instructors in adopting STEM active learning techniques, with the goal of aligning STEM teaching techniques across California’s community colleges and public university system to improve undergraduate student outcomes.

In this program, STEM faculty from the UC system, CSU system, and two-year institutions learn together to improve their instructional practice and build relationships and understanding of one another’s teaching and learning contexts.

The program builds an interdisciplinary learning community, provides continuous support, and is situated within faculty’s everyday work. The program has the following objectives:

  1. Faculty will develop their STEM education expertise, which includes understanding how learning happens and skills to facilitate student discussion and reflection—particularly in large, undergraduate STEM lecture courses.
  2. Faculty will gain experience in using online technologies to develop their own instructional practice and to support student learning in their lecture courses.
  3. Faculty will re-design their STEM lectures to apply what they learn, and integrate new approaches to their teaching practice.

Starting in January 2018, two UC Santa Cruz STEM lecturers, who have themselves participated in the 10-month Faculty Learning Program (FLP), will implement the program at UC Santa Cruz with a cohort of 8 UC Santa Cruz STEM faculty and 5 STEM faculty from local community colleges with high transfer rates.

The FLP is a 10-month-long, blended program composed of an in-person, two-day workshop, followed by a series of online, interactive, synchronous sessions. The program begins in January 2018 and continues through Fall 2018, with no programming over the summer. Each participant will receive $1,500, funded through the NSF IUSE grant.
