(Contributed)

October 10, 2017 — Marina, CA

The Monterey Bay Economic Partnership (MBEP) is hosting its 3rd Annual State of the Region Conference on November 8, 2017, at the Hyatt Regency Monterey. This year the theme is “Let’s Get Moving!” which will showcase ways to improve how people move around our region and explore how to break through inertia to get things done in important areas like housing, workforce and education, health care, and infrastructure. This will be another great MBEP conference with over 400 civic, business, education and nonprofit leaders from across the region.

Morning Sessions. Our morning keynote, Chuck Marohn, CEO of Strong Towns, will inspire us with innovative solutions in transportation that showcase how to get people moving. Mr. Marohn is a Professional Engineer and is the Founder and President of Strong Towns. He is also the author of Thoughts on Building Strong Towns as well as A World Class Transportation System. He hosts the Strong Towns podcast and is a primary writer for Strong Towns’ web content. He has presented Strong Towns concepts in hundreds of cities and towns across North America.

Mr. Marohn will be followed by panel discussions with regional and statewide experts that explore building more of the right kind of housing moderated by New Way Homes/Envision Housing CEO Sibley Simon and panelists Pilar Lorenzana of SV@Home, Jan Lindenthal of MidPen Housing, Gonzales City Manager and MBEP Co-Chair Rene Mendez, and John Swift of Swift Consulting Services. Dr. Chris Benner from UC Santa Cruz will then moderate a panel on how to strike the right balance between growth and the environment with Michael DeLapa of LandWatch, Meea Kang of Related California, Santa Cruz County Supervisor Zach Friend, and William Ow of Ow Family Properties.

Community Impact Award. Alan McKay, CEO of the Central California Alliance for Health (CCAH), will receive the Community Impact Award. Alan has led CCAH since the health plan’s inception in 1995. Under his leadership, CCAH has grown to embrace Santa Cruz, Monterey and Merced counties, and provide health insurance to youth and adults, particularly those who were previously uninsured. Today, CCAH covers over 350,000 members to promote prevention, early detection and effective treatment, and to improve access to quality health care for those it serves.

Roundtable Discussions. After lunch participants will join a Roundtable Discussion of their choosing to delve more deeply into the challenges and opportunities our region faces. These discussions will be facilitated by subject matter experts to brainstorm solutions and will cover a broad range of subjects — from transforming our downtowns, expanding employer-sponsored housing, empowering our youth to succeed, and realizing regional ubiquitous high-speed broadband. Discussion leaders and subject matter experts include City Managers Charles Montoya, Martin Bernal and Ray Corpuz, Sara Latham, Assistant Vice Chancellor of UCSC, Barbara Meister, Director of Public Affairs of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Rosa Vivian Fernandez, CEO of the San Benito Health Foundation, Dr. Nanette Mickiewicz, CEO of Dominican Hospital, Dr. Willard Lewallen, President of Hartnell College, Doron Comerchero, Executive Director of Food What, Dr. Fred Watson, Professor at CSUMB and many more.

Marketplace. During the morning registration, breaks and the closing wine reception, attendees can visit the Marketplace, where community organizations will be sharing projects aligned with MBEP’s mission.

Reception with Monterey Bay Winemakers. At the close of the event, attendees will be treated to a reception with regionally crafted wines from Bargetto and Guerra Cellars. Martinelli’s will also provide nonalcoholic sparkling cider.
