Dr. Sue Carter has been invested as the Narinder Kapany Professor in Entrepreneurship, a position endowed by Professor Emeritus Narinder Kapany. She is the director of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurial Development (CIED), associate dean of graduate studies, and professor of physics at UCSC.

“I feel incredibly honored to be the Narinder Kapany Professor in Entrepreneurship. Dr. Kapany, known as one of the founders of fiber optics, is a renowned entrepreneur himself. He started the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurial Development (CIED) at UCSC nearly 40 years ago. Dr. Kapany grew CIED to be a leader in entrepreneurship education,” said Carter.

Carter added that Kapany gave a congressional testimony in front of the US House of Representatives in support of the Stevenson-Wydler Technology Innovation Act of 1980,  the first major U.S. technology transfer law. It required federal laboratories to actively participate in and budget for technology transfer activities.

Carter said she will use the funding from the professorship to support women and underrepresented minority students, as well as students from developing countries, to participate in innovation and entrepreneurial activities at UCSC. The appointment, held in the Division of Graduate Studies, is for three years.

The investiture ceremony took place during a small luncheon on June 5 at McHenry Library. It followed the dedication of the Sundar Singh Kapany Group Study Room, named for Dr. Kapany’s father. Dr. Kapany was also honored for endowing the professorship and donating a significant collection of books about the Sikh religion, culture, and history to McHenry Library.
