Developing countries in Latin America have embraced software development and the rate of growth of their developer population is expected to be 4.1% in 2017, a growth rate that tops both North America and the EMEA region for the first time, and matches the growth rate of the Asia-Pacific region according to Evans Data’s newly released Developer Population and Demographics Study. The bi-annual study builds on ten years of trended data, exhaustive primary and secondary research and a sophisticated model to estimate current developer populations and make projections for the future.

Within Latin America, Brazil is the current leader in developer population and that is expected to continue into the future. However, Mexico is growing faster than most of its neighbors and is expected to overtake Argentina to become second in developer population within Latin America by 2021.

Also by 2021, India is projected to be the country with the largest software developer population worldwide, topping the United States, which currently has the largest countrywide developer population. China is projected to continue to be third in developer population.

“We’re seeing a lot of excitement about Latin America both from clients and within the developer community,” said Janel Garvin, CEO of Evans Data Corp. “Latin America in 2017 echoes in many ways the enthusiasm and youth that were the hallmarks of the Asia-Pacific region in years past. Not only is the growth rate strong but the developers themselves are very open to exploring and adopting new technologies. This is a region that projects a very strong future.”

Evans Data Corp’s Global Development Population and Demographics Study is the de facto standard in developer population estimates. The study, which is now in its 21st edition, estimates not only current software developer populations across four major regions and forty different countries, but also overlays global primary research onto the population numbers to show numbers of developers forecast to adopt technologies now and in the future.
