MBARI receives $75K for climate study

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute on Tuesday received a $75,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to study the relationship between atmospheric warming and ocean acidification in the Arctic Ocean.

While the funding will specifically go toward better understanding of the effects of warming temperatures on the atmosphere and their correlation to ocean acidification, the grant money will also support an early career scientist, three Ph.D. students and several undergraduate students researching the connection.

“The Central Coast is home to one of the highest concentrations of ocean research institutions in the world,” said Rep. Sam Farr (D-Carmel), who announced the award in a press release. “Understanding our oceans and climate change is critical work and I’m thrilled to announce federal funding is headed to MBARI.”
