How Zero Motorcycles builds the Tesla of two-wheelers in Silicon Valley

About 45 miles south of the Silicon Valley factory where Tesla Motors is building out the electric automobile industry one car at a time, Zero Motorcycles is undertaking a perhaps more difficult task.

The company, based in Scotts Valley, is vying to establish itself as the dominant seller of electric motorcycles globally. Zero shipped about 1,300 of its bikes last year — an increase of about 30 percent from the year before. By comparison, sales of Tesla’s Model S increased more than eightfold to 22,477 units in 2013.
