Santa Cruz New Tech Meetup — the must attend event

Last week, I wrote about the sixth anniversary of the Santa Cruz New Tech Meetup coming up this Wednesday, February 5 at 6:15 pm at Cruzio. As the tech community prepares to celebrate, Santa Cruz Sentinel spoke with founder Doug Erickson about how the meetup has grown since conception, and reported on what some of the other voices in the community have to say…
The tipping point came last year. Meetup membership increased 20 percent, attendance doubled and sponsorship grew to include Cruzio, NextSpace, the Santa Cruz Economic Development and South Swell Ventures — recognition by Silicon Valley venture capitalist Bud Colligan of a vibrant tech community.
The meetup is “one of my favorite things about Santa Cruz… people can get a lot of information quickly and it can spark collaboration,” said Emily Cohan, founder of It’s Great Media.
“We’re as rich in resources here as any other place. To look legit, I thought it might be better to have a ZIP code in Silicon Valley or San Francisco. I don’t feel that way at all anymore,” said Kara Kytle in considering the plan for her own startup.
